Long Weekends are the Best

Happy Memorial Day!  First and foremost, I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to all the men and women who have served or are currently serving in our armed forces.  America’s people are free because of you.

This Memorial Day weekend was spent in Chicago, IL for my cousin’s high school graduation.  No one loves the actual graduation ceremony, but it is so special to celebrate one of the greatest accomplishments!  I was 7 when my cousin was born and I have seen him grow up into a wonderful young man.  Boy, how time flies!!

FRIDAY – Working from home is a large perk of my current job.  I am taking a few online training courses and it’s so much nicer to do that from the couch then at a desk.

The other positives, Keurig for breakfasts!

And for eats, some vanilla Chobani and chocolate granola.

When lunch rolled around, I heated up some baked ziti.  It was quite delicious.

And then I had my favorite snack of all time – peanut butter and apples.

Another snack – some kettle chips.  I watched Real Housewives of New Jersey re-runs on Bravo.  (In case you were wondering, the new season starts June 2!)

When dinner time rolled around, neither of us wanted to cook.  So, we got into the car and headed to Smash Burger.

I ordered a grilled chicken cobb sandwich, which was supposed to have avocado on it!  It didn’t.  And, I’m still upset about it!  But the sandwich was actually really, really good.  I did have a few fries, too.  The night was spent lounging on the couch and hanging out.  We had an early morning the next day.

SATURDAY – I woke up early for a Saturday (like 7:15) to run 10 miles.

Before the run, I snacked on 2 graham crackers and some peanut butter.

This pre-run snack actually held me over for the entire 2 hours of running.  #impressive

The run was great!  It was only about 45 degrees and the sun was coming up, it was great.  Once I hit mile 4.5, I was cruisin’.  It’s definitely getting me excited for the race!!

Then it was time to hit the road to Chicago….But first, a stop to Panera.

I ordered a hazelnut coffee and a cinnamon scone.  I only had a few bites of the scone but it was delicious!  I ate my scone while reading the latest issue of Marie Clare.  I love that magazine because it’s not just about fashion, it also reports on world issues.

And then, 5 hours later, we arrived in Chicago!!  When we got to my aunt and uncle’s house, we chowed down one appetizers, including hummus and corn dip.  I also made myself 2 vodka tonics.  Gotta love a full bar!

Dinner was delicious, except I didn’t eat the main course.  It was pulled pork sandwiches and BBQ sauce and my stomach just do not agree.  So, I had some Portillo’s salad, some potato salad and 2 deviled eggs.  Of course, chocolate cake was devoured!

SUNDAY – Graduation Day!!  We awoke early in the morning and chowed down on some yummy breakfast!  I had some egg bake, fruit, a little bit of monkey bread and a chocolate-covered peanut butter bar, with a side of orange juice.  So yummy!

Then we headed off to graduation, which was pretty long with 600+ kids in the class.  With a last name towards the end of the alphabet, we made sure to bring snacks!!!

This picture shows the gushers wrapper under our seats…there were also some granola bar wrappers. Hey, we had to sit for a long time!

My family and I went back to our hotel for some appetizers before heading over to my cousin’s graduation dinner.  My mom, sister and I split a bottle of Prosecco and we ordered a cheese board and some hummus dips.

                                IMG_1035                    IMG_1036

Then over to Maggiano’s!

I had a little bit of everything.  It was amazing.  It was great to sit around with family, tell funny stories about Corey and my uncle gave a heartfelt speech.  It was relaxing and perfect!

How was your Memorial Day weekend?

Weekend Recap

I would have assumed that a nice weekend at home would be pretty relaxing.  Boy was I wrong!

Even though we were home (ie in Michigan), we were pretty much go, go, go all weekend.  Let’s recap the weekend:

Breakfast was 2 pieces of toast, 1 banana and chia seeds, with a side of hazelnut coffee.  {I just love my Chicago mug!}

Snacks included some Cheez-It’s and an apple.

IMG_0977 IMG_0980

There’s nothing like a lunchtime work out!  I did a quick 3 mile run at a 10:30 pace.  It was nice to actually do something active during the day.  It kept my spirit up for the rest of the afternoon.

And dinner was enjoyed on the balcony with a bottle of Chianti.  Oh so good!!  Dinner included: shrimp sauteed in olive oil, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and orzo with basil, cherry tomatoes and parmesan cheese.  I also enjoyed a side salad of arugula/spinach blend and ranch dressing.  For dessert, a super old chocolate covered Oreo.  It was a great dinner with great conversation!

SATURDAY – The weekend began bright and early as we had to complete the natural family planning portion of our marriage prep.  It was pretty awful and I’ll write a whole recap on marriage prep in the Catholic church for those who are interested.

We ran to get some coffee before our day.  I ordered a cappuccino, which was perfect!!

After our meeting, we definitely needed some alcohol.  So, off to Buddy’s Pizza we went and enjoyed some Stella, a side salad and pizza with pepperoni and green peppers.  It was perfect!

IMG_0988 IMG_0989 IMG_0990

After lunch, we ran some errands and even finalized our tux rentals for the wedding!!  It was unexpected but really necessary.  It feels so good to have that checked off the list!

We came home and I snacked on some cantaloupe.  Then, we watched This is 40 on demand, which was actually a good movie.  I drank a glass of Chianti and ate popcorn for dinner!  It was the perfect Saturday night spent snuggling on the couch and drinking vino.

SUNDAY – On the agenda, a run!  It was incredibly hot, like 80 degrees hot.  I wasn’t really looking forward to running in that hot heat, but I ran with 2 co-workers, which made it fun.  We completed 6 miles {we started wanting to do 9, but it was just too hot} and I’m not even going to tell you the time.  It wasn’t good.  TOO HOT!

I ate 2 pieces of toast with peanut butter and the remaining Cheez-It’s before the run, drank an entire Gatorade on the run and then starved for a few hours.

After my run, we ran to Macy’s to start our registry.  It was so much fun!  And we actually agreed on everything.  It was a nice surprise.  I’ll also be recapping our registry experiences.

Then, we went to Chipotle – I had 3 chicken tacos with chicken, lettuce, guac and cheese.  Of course, chips and guac were consumed.

I’m pretty exhausted just writing this post.   All in all, I’m pretty pleased with the way this weekend turned out – from all angles: food, exercise and quality time spent with the man!

Running During the Week?

This Friday has been absolutely gorgeous.  The weather is great, I’m working from home and the man and I are actually in the state of MI this weekend for the only weekend in May!  It’s been crazy.

Let’s just jump right into what I ate/how I exercised this week, shall we?

WEDNESDAY – Hump day was pretty good day.  The weather was great, work was good and I ate ice cream.  What else can you want for a Wednesday?

BREAKFAST – The day started off with a banana.  Have you seen this video?  It is hilarious.

LUNCH – LEFTOVERS!  I must say that these enchiladas are super good.

I am lucky enough to have the option to work out of different offices or from home with my current job.  I go into the office where my boss is located mostly on Mondays (because I have a meeting with him) and then tend to work from another office that is closer to my apartment (literally 6 minutes) most other days.  The great thing is, I got to go home for lunch!  I watched some Watch What Happens Live as I ate these babies!

SNACK – I mentioned this cake on my What I’m Loving Wednesday post, but it’s worth mentioning again.  It was someone’s birthday in the office, so that meant, CAKE.  The cake I chose was a Sander’s Bumpy Cake.  I’ve never heard of it, which is apparently a crime for anyone living in Michigan, but I’m new here!!  But, it was definitely worth the wait.  The bumpy cake is basically a Devil’s food cake with butter cream bumps and fudge frosting.  #amazeballs I also had a side of mint chocolate chip ice cream!

And when I came home, I snacked on some strawberries on the balcony.

EXERCISE – I ran 5 miles outside and it was wonderful.  The weather was gorgeous and I kept an 11 minute mile pace.  Job well done!

DINNER – A quick meal in the form of whole wheat rontini, broccoli and my mom’s spaghetti sauce.  SO DELICIOUS!

THURSDAY – Yesterday was great because it ended with a wonderful happy hour with co-workers at a sushi bar, Ronin.  But first.

BREAKFAST – Another banana.  I just love these!

SNACK – A lunchtime trip to Whole Foods.  I love this place with my whole heart……did you catch that?

Pretty flowers!!

I enjoyed an iced coffee outside.  Their iced coffee is actually delicious!

LUNCH – Leftovers from dinner.  Quite yummy.

And a cookie.

DINNER – I am a sucker for sushi.  The man doesn’t love it, so when co-workers want to go, I’m more than game

It started with a glass of pinot grigio (I had 2 glasses) and edammae.  Both delicious.

I shared some rolls, but I mostly stuck with my roll – a Shinto roll, which consisted of lettuce, carrots, avocado, mango and shrimp.  Amazing!!

And since someone else wanted dessert…I obliged.  Fried Oreo’s and some ice cream!  Sign me up!

So that was my past 2 days.  I know I had ice cream twice and a cookie, but, I need some chocolate in my life.  I just can’t get rid of it.  I’d rather give up salt than chocolate.  EVERY TIME.  And I ran 5 miles.  This is why I run.  It’s all about balance, I must say.

What do you think?!

70’s on 7

Happy Sunday!!  It’s my all-time favorite day.  You can sleep in, still have alcohol mimosas at brunch and laying on the couch all day is completely acceptable.

This weekend was a great one.  It was extremely relaxing – Friday night, I stayed home alone watching T.V. and going to sleep early.  It was glorious.  Saturday, I woke up, hung out with the man and then met a friend to run 7 miles!  (More on that later).  Then we went to grab margaritas!  Absolutely wonderful.

FRIDAY – The beginning of the weekend was great.  Work was pretty good, I ate some good eats and cleaned out the DVR.  Breakfast was an apple.  Lunch was a chopped salad with ranch dressing.  It was amazing.  The next picture is of my open sunroof.  The first open sunroof of 2013!!  Oh, then I had a few Oreo’s.  For dinner, I had whole wheat rigatoni with butter and shredded mozzarella cheese.  I spent my Friday night watching some of my favorite Bravo shows over a glass of white wine.  For dessert, I had the last piece of cake in bed.  What is it about eating food in bed that is so delicious?

IMG_0845 IMG_0846 IMG_0847 IMG_0848 IMG_0849 IMG_0851 IMG_0852

SATURDAY – What a great day Saturday was!  Not only was it gorgeous weather, delicious margaritas were devoured.  For breakfast, I had 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with peanut butter, an apple and hazelnut coffee.  Then I had some Sun Chips!  For a pre-run snack, I had a mozzarella cheese stick.  Dinner after the run was chips and guacamole, Georgia Peach margaritas and I split my entree with a friend.  It was a quesadilla with chicken, bacon, cheese and avocado, which was then covered with sour cream.  It was delicious and I’m so glad we split it!!

IMG_0853 IMG_0854 IMG_0855 IMG_0859 IMG_0860

THE RUN – I was supposed to run 7 miles on Saturday, which is what we did.  I swung by a running store to pick up some Gu and a nice running fanny pack!  I had a chocolate Gu on the run, which was amazing.  I also grabbed a Gatorade because I don’t think I drank enough water before hand.

I like my fanny pack.  It’s pink!

I learned a lot of things on my run yesterday.

  • It was 70 degrees – that is too hot for my body.  I’ve fainted 3 times in my life, 2 of which were because I got overheated during exercise.  I really need to watch how I feel while I exercise.  I could feel myself getting hot if there wasn’t a breeze, so I ran pretty slowly.
  • I need to practice hills!   There were some step hills on the run and I walked up those hills because I was exhausted and hot.  That was the only walking I did, but I need to build up my endurance for the race!
  • I can’t carry anything while running.  I put my Gu and car keys in my new fanny pack, but I held the Gatorade in my hand. It was surprisingly heavy.  So, note to self: I really need to drink about 3 times more water during the day when I have to run that far.
  • I can finish anything if I put my mind to it.  Even though I was insanely tired and hot, I finished the run!  It took me a total of 1:21:30, which is about 11:39 average pace.  This pace isn’t horrible since I walked up the hills.  I would say my average running pace was 10:24, which is a little slower than my goal for race day.

I’m proud of myself for running that far and not giving up and turning around.  That’s all that matters.  I’m a little sore today, mostly in my knees and shoulders – I’m sure that means I was running with my shoulders up .  Now it’s time to relax before heading to the grocery store.

How were your runs this weekend?

Total Relaxation

Happy Sunday, all!  I took yesterday off so I could have a day to just be at home, collect my thoughts and enjoy time with the man.

Let’s recap the weekend!  I’m going to try something new this time around and break down the meals and not the days…tell me what you think!

BREAKFASTS – Friday I had some Chobani strawberry/banana Greek yogurt with vanilla granola.  It kept me full for quite a while!  Then, Saturday I had a Panera sesame bagel with cream cheese (I was so famished, I forgot to take a picture)!  Today, I had 2 Eggo whole wheat waffles with peanut butter.  YUMMY!!!

LUNCHES – Not too much variety for lunches this weekend.  Friday, I was supposed to have a lunch meeting that got cancelled so I came home and ate 2 Eggo Whole Wheat waffles with peanut butter.  Saturday, I had some baby romaine with carrots and a whole zucchini covered in some ranch dressing.  Note to self: bottles without a squirt top are not the best!  Today, the man was making pizza, so I had 2 pieces.  It hit the spot!!

DINNERS – Friday night we went out with several co-workers to What Crepe? in Royal Oak.  It was fantastic!  I ordered a crepe with salmon, avocado, brie cheese and truffle oil on the side.  I also had a glass of prosecco.  I love me some prosecco!  For dessert, we ordered a crepe with blueberries, strawberries and bananas with whipped cream, nutella and vanilla ice cream.  Oh boy, was that amazing!  We licked the plate clean! We then we out to this brewery, Dragon Meade, where I ordered their house made root beer.  I’m never a fan of crazy beers and I was DD, so root beer for me!  Saturday after running some errands, we swung by Chipotle for dinner!

Please note: I did not list all my snacks for the day.  There was some fruit involved!

Now that you’ve seen everything I’ve eaten, let’s see if I burned off some of these calories.

EXERCISE – Saturday I ran 5 miles with my co-worker and friend, Lindsay.  We met on a trail and ran with a friend’s Husky, Indy.  I definitely didn’t want to run that day but having a friend doing it with me held me accountable.  And you know what, you’ll never regret a work out!  We kept a 11:15 minute mile pace which was pretty good.  It was the longest run yet and the fact that I ran the whole time is wonderful!  Today was a cross training day, so I headed to yoga to stretch out my muscles.  It hurt so good!

Overall, I know I ate way too much this weekend.  I had chocolate crepes, ice cream on Saturday and 5 too many Oreos today.  I have a rule though about when it’s okay to not count calories: 1) when you’re on vacation and 2) when it’s that female time.  So, put 2 and 2 together!  But, I’m pleased with all my work outs and that I’ve kept up pretty well on my training.

Goals this week: follow my training schedule, eat more fruits and veggies, do Pilates.  It’s going to be a 4-day work week for me!  We’re going to Milwaukee this weekend for the tasting at our reception site!  I can’t wait!

It’s the Weekend!

AIt’s Friday!!!  Thank Goodness.  I am so looking forward to the weekend, you have no idea.

Before we get into what’s I’m most looking forward to this weekend, let’s dive into what happened yesterday.

I worked from home and worked through breakfast with 2 cups of coffee!  I don’t know what my problem was.

LUNCH – I use this term loosely because it was around 11 by the time I was starving.  Again, we had zero food in the house (but we did go to grocery store last night).  I really wanted something carb-loaded….so….

PB & JThen,

I devoured a perfectly proportioned peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

SNACK – I kept on being a firewoman throughout the afternoon and I using a fire extinguisher is quite exhausting.  (Okay, is that too many metaphors?)  I got pretty hungry and wanted something salty before my 3 mile run.

Tortilla Chips and Cheddar Cheese

IMG_0697 IMG_0698

Some more snacks – chocolate covered Twizzlers, which weren’t that good, and a Kashi bar.

EXERCISE – I had a 3 mile run on the agenda and the weather was gorgeous.  It was about 50 degrees and the sun was out!  Time to run around the neighborhood.

Hey, clear skies

I had a really good run.  I put on a fleece jacket because I needed pockets to hold my keys.  NOTE TO SELF: 50 degrees does not need fleece!

That’s not too bad….

Then I came home and found a package!  Since we signed up for the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon early enough, we got a gift package, courtesy of Fleet Feet Chicago.

Hello, Luna Bar!

In the gift bag:

  • White Macademia Nut Luna Bar…which I ate after my run.  It was delicious.
  • Chocolate GU
  • A hat
  • Candle
  • Red Dress Pin
  • A Make-Up Bag

DINNER – We ran to the grocery store and then it was time for some dinner.  We had some elbow macaroni, andouille sausage , green pepper and my mom’s homemade spaghetti sauce.  We both enjoyed it!!

Yummy Sauce!

Now for the fun stuff!

What’s on the agenda for this weekend:

  • Finshing the bottle of wine from our impromptu date on Wednesday
  • Running 4 miles Saturday morning to keep up with my training schedule
  • Watching Lincoln (hopefully).  I didn’t watch it before the Oscars but I’ve started to be really intrigued by Daniel Day Lewis.
  • Cleaning the apartment – oh man does it need some spring cleaning
  • Taking a featured exercise class on Sunday as my cross training – Ballet Body Fusion.  We’ll see how it goes, remember Chicago?
  • Being outside!  I really want to sit on the balcony, drinking coffee Look at this forecast:

What’s on your agenda for this weekend?

Chicago Women’s Half Marathon

Happy Friday!  Boy, do I love Friday’s!  Who doesn’t?

I figured I start this post by discussing my latest goal: run the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon on June 23rd.

My BFF and I have run 2 half marathons together and we both decided we needed a new goal for the summer.  We both are focused on losing weight (she’s done incredibly well and looks fantastic!) and training keeps us focused.  It’s always nice to have a buddy, not only for race day, but for training.  She lives in Chicago so we’re using the powers of social media as a way to hold us accountable.

Training doesn’t technically begin until April 2nd, but between now and then we’re training for training!  The 5k on Sunday will definitely be a good indicator of where I am.  We are using one of Hal Higdon’s training schedules and RunKeeper to keep track.

RunKeeper is an app you can download to your iPhone or Android phone and uses GPS technology to show how far you ran, your pace and total time.  The man actually used it on our freezing run the other day.  The best part of this app is you can share your runs with your friends.  This is how we’re going to hold ourselves accountable.  Each run we’ll share with each other just to see what our pace is and if we really went as far as we were supposed to!

I’m excited to train and run a race specifically for women.  It sounds extremely empowering and will be nice to see both our guy’s cheering for us from the sidelines!!

Stay tuned – I’ll be sure to share some stories (both good and bad!) on how it’s going.
