Motivation Monday

Happy Monday!  Another week is upon us and I have to say, I am pretty pumped for this week.  I’m really looking forward to this weekend because I’m going home to help my mom find a dress to wear to the wedding.  She has been shopping and found a couple dresses she likes but wants to get my opinion.  My mom, sister and I are the kind of shoppers who don’t shy away from an opinion (and that’s true for things other than shopping) and can tell immediately if we like something once it’s on.

In the spirit of shopping for the wedding, I’m motivated to eat extra healthy this week.  It’s my Motivation Monday.

The whole point of this blog is to document my journey from flab to fab for my upcoming wedding!  It’s time to kick it up a notch!

This week I am going to track my calories, via the blog and some online tools, work out hard and eat more fruits and veggies!  That’s my goal.

The motivation: DRESS!  DRESS!  DRESS!

No, this isn’t my dress, but you get the point! I want to look hot, hottie, hot and this week, my dress is serving as motivation!

What’s your motivation for working out and eating healthy?

Toasty Tuesday

As I was watching the Real Housewives of Orange County today, Tamra gave an emotional speech at a women’s expo.  It was really heartfelt about her life.  She closed her speech with a great motivational quote, “Strong is the new skinny.”

Since I’m in full blown training for the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon, I am definitely noticing a difference in my body and it’s strength.  I used to look at my legs as a nice body part, but now I look at them as the vehicles to allow me to finish my 13.1 miles on June 23rd!

I’m starting to transition my mind speak from negative to positive.  It’s about being strong and pushing your body to limits you never thought possible.

See, Tamra Barney and the Real Housewives can be a positive experience.

Motivation Monday {Yoga Edition}

It’s still Monday and after a long weekend of wine drinking and eating everything in sight, this week’s Motivation Monday surrounds my longing to bring back yoga into my life.

Before I started training for the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon, I would do yoga at least once a week.  Yoga is great for stretching out my muscles and I should have been practicing while training!  It’s hard to keep up with some other practice when you’re running hours at a time.

I started doing some Google-ing on the benefits of yoga and how yoga and running should work together.  I found out some interesting things!

  • According to Dr. Oz, yoga helps clean blood of waste and trains us to loosen our muscles we ignore in our normal days.
  • Yoga helps de clutter your mind.  < This is why I need yoga!
  • Increases flexibility. < I could barely touch my toes in high school…now I can!  If your muscles aren’t flexible, you are more likely to get fatigued earlier in your run.
  • Your digestive track gets regulated through yoga.

I know these aren’t ground-breaking discoveries, but it’s always helpful for me to research as motivation.

My motivation for doing yoga this week is to de clutter my mind and regulate my digestive track!  I have a lot weighing on my mind as of late and I really need to relax!  If you’re interested in yoga, you can go to classes at your local gym, your local Lululemon store (it’s free!), local studios or a DVD in your living room.

This week, I plan on doing a class at my gym and the Body by Bethenny DVD.

How do you like to do yoga?

Toasty Tuesday {Reality TV edition}

Oh boy, oh boy.  This week has been crazy and it’s only Tuesday.  How is it only Tuesday?

This week is focused around my love for reality television.

I love reading the Bravolebrity (yes, that is a word) blogs each week to see what her reaction is to the week’s episode.  I like the ones when the ladies talk about the episode and give more detail into what’s happening in their daily lives.

So, a recap of the Real Housewives of Orange County is making my heart warm (and the man’s head hurt).

The characters (for those of you who don’t have an obsession):

Vicki Gunvalson – “I’m my own boss, and it’s time for a raise.”  She is the only remaining original housewife out of all the franchises.  I loved Vicki in the first few seasons because she was an entrepreneur (she has her won life insurance company), she loved her 2 kids and fought with her husband in a cute way.  This season (season 8) Vicki is a little annoying.  She has been divorced from her husband who I really liked for 2 years, is dating this awful guy from Mississippi who only loves her for her money and just seems down in the dumps.  Where’s the old Vicki?!

Tamra Barney – “The best thing about starting over is never looking back.”  Tamra is the fire cracker of the group.  She flies off the handle when she’s upset, curses like a sailor, and has a bangin’ bod for someone whose had 4 children.  She’s been on the show for a few seasons and we’ve seen her go from a loving stay-at-home mom with a husband who liked to control her, to opening up her own fitness studio with her new fiancee.  (She did get divorced!)  I like Tamra when she’s being a little snarky because she has some fantastic one liners: “You’re psychotic Jesus Jugs!”  I don’t like her when she’s stirring up sh*t.

Heather Dubrow – “I may be married to a plastic surgeon, but I’m 98% real.”  This is Heather’s second season on the show and I have to say, she’s probably my favorite.  She lives in this amazing house with her plastic surgeon husband, Terry, and their 4 gorgeous children.  She put her career as an actress on hold to be with the kids but has gotten the itch again.   She is level-headed, has an incredibly large vocabulary and rolls her eyes at her husband’s ill-timed jokes.  She is a breath of fresh air!  (I should mention that they are insanely wealthy – the biggest house, she always has on some kind of Chanel and their garage floor has their wedding monogram on it!  WHAT?!)

Gretchen Rossi – “When life gets tough, I just keep getting stronger and stronger.”  When Gretchen joined the show back in season 4 (I think), she was engaged to a much older man who was dying of leukemia.  No one really accepted her because no one believed she was in love with her fiance.  Well, unfortunately, he passed away, and now she’s engaged to Slade Smiley, who was engaged to one of the original housewives of the franchise.  Are you confused?   I don’t love Gretchen because I think she can’t take her own medicine and always wants to stir the pot.  And she has a heinous purse line and make-up line.

Alexis Bellino – “I know who I am and God does, too.”  Can you guess who Jesus Jugs is?!  Alexis joined 3 seasons ago and I liked her at first.  She seemed level headed with a nice marriage.  But then, her husband seemed to be quite controlling and didn’t want her working because she needed to stay home with their children (even though they had 2 nannies)!  She seemed pretty pretentious, except she wears a CZ ring because she’s afraid someone will steal her “real” engagement ring, and only wanted God on her side.  She’s not my favorite.  I don’t like people a) talk about God when it’s not necessary and b) talk about how many cars they drive and on what days and c) think they can be an actress or designer without any real training.

Lydia McLaughlin – “You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough.”  Lydia is the newest member of the franchise and I actually like her.  Even though she’s “Christian on steroids” (as says Alexis), she seems very welcoming, level headed and talks to her pot-head mom about not smoking around her 2 adorable sons.  She seems to speak her mind and do so eloquently.  She and her husband own a lifestyle magazine, she designs jewelry and travels to Italy every summer.  I think I like her.

Okay, so that was a lot and not really a recap, but I’ll be brief.  This week’s episode surrounded Heather’s guest appearance on Hot in Cleveland and that’s it.  There wasn’t any drama and it was pretty boring.  The only drama: Alexis wasn’t invited and she decides to take an acting class.  I hate when these housewives who have never had a desire to act, now want to act because they are “celebrities.”

Heather did a wonderful job and Gretchen shows up late because she was having a rendezvous with Slade where he gave her a Rolls Royce for her birthday.  Now, just last season Slade was complaining about not having any money as he lost his job in the mortgage industry.  It should also be mentioned that Slade’s son (with a woman who isn’t Gretchen) is 13 and has a life threatening brain tumor.  But, he can afford a Rolls Royce?!  Those Jones’s sure like those fancy cars.  Come to find out, Gretchen leased a Mercedes and the lease was up, so Slade took it upon himself to trade-in for the RR because it was only “a couple hundred more dollars a month.”  You know what I could do with a couple hundred extra dollars a month.  I certainly wouldn’t lease another car!

It was a boring episode, but just recapping the characters made me happy!!!

Motivation Monday {Career Edition}

Today’s edition of Motivation Monday is around career/work.

In case you don’t remember, I started a new job in information technology sales.  I’ve always wanted to try sales because I’m outgoing, love to solve problems and love talking to people.

What I don’t love about sales (at least now) is the prospecting/cold calling, learning all about IT, the stress, the unpredictable income.

I’m still in the newbie phase and can’t say if I love it or hate it, but I have found that I have to be passionate about what I’m doing.

Here are my career motivators:

  • passion
  • respect (I have to work for a company and a boss that respects me and whom I respect)
  • challenging work
  • ability for growth
  • money
  • work/life balance

These are my main motivators.  I don’t think your first (or second) job right after college will provide all of these motivators, but I would love to find a job/career that will combine all of these aspects!!

Fashion Friday

FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY!!!!   I love me some Friday where I can relax on the balcony and drink some vino.

Today’s Fashion Friday is all about hot mamas.  There seem to be a lot of gorgeous pregnant celebs (hello, Duchess Kate and Kim Kardashian) nowadays and I love to see how beautiful these ladies look with a little bundle of joy on the way!  Let’s do a best dressed and worst dress….circa Fashion Police!

1. Duchess of Cambridge, Her Royal Highness, Kate (keep up to date with her fashion at, What Kate Wore).

My BFF is OBSESSED with Kate Middleton.  She has more pictures of Kate in her apartment than pictures of me.  I mean, we all want Kate to be our best friend, so I understand 🙂  Plus, who doesn’t love a future Queen of England who shops at TopShop!

2. Busy Phillipps.  Now, I don’t watch any shows of her’s, but I saw her on Watch What Happens Live and she was so funny!  She was absolutely hilarious.  I love when a celebrity that watches what I watch.  And she’s BFF with Michelle Williams.  And I mean, “Hello, Gorgeous!”

3. Jenna Dawan Tatum.  I mean, she’s married to the sexiest man alive, Channing Tatum, but she is gorgeous in her own rite.  She has the cutest little body and it looks like she has a basketball under her shirt.  So precious.

1. Kim Kardashian.  Now, I think Kim is really beautiful and I would never tell a woman, especially a pregnant woman, that she looks fat.  I just don’t think Kim dresses to accentuate her curves in a great way.  In my opinion, she just doesn’t want to wear maternity clothes, but I think she could really benefit from some Rosie Pope.  Come on, Kim, you’re so sexy.  This wasn’t a great choice.

2. Jessica Simpson.  Now I think that she is definitely dressing better the second time around, but she’s a fashion designer!  She should be looking HOT!  I mean, no…leopard!

So, note to self, when I get pregnant {5 years from now!} I should dress like a Duchess and not a Reality Queen. Got it!  What do you all think?

Tasty Thursday {on a Friday}

Hi Everyone!  Happy Friday!

I’m sorry that this is coming late, but I definitely want to share a recipe that I will be trying this weekend!

For this Tasty Thursday, I would like to share this recipe from Bethenny Frankel.

Whether you love her or hate her, you have to admit that Bethenny knows what she’s doing from a PR and product development perspective.  I have read her book, Naturally Thin, and I have her yoga DVD’s, so I’m definitely a fan!

She has an article in Health Magazine and she shared a recipe for a breakfast frittata that sounds amazing!

The recipe calls for:

  • 1 cup sauteed veggies (I’ll probably use broccoli, onions, spinach and tomatoes)
  • 1 egg yolk and 3-4 egg whites
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese

(I love recipes that don’t have too many ingredients!!)

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a nonstick pan with cooking spray and saute the veggies.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and the egg whites with a little salt and pepper. Pour the egg mixture into the pan and move it around with a spatula until slightly solidified. Transfer the pan to the oven
  3. Bake until the frittata is almost firm to the touch (approximately 15-20 minutes). Sprinkle with the cheese and bake until firm. Serve immediately.

The man and I have a plan that on Sunday we’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast on our balcony (complete with mimosas) and I hope to make this frittata.  I’ll be sure to share our thoughts!

Enjoy your Friday and I’ll be back later to recap my eats from the past few days!
