Does Tennis Count as Cross-Training?

Wow!  I know I’ve said it before, but this past week has flown!

I have been pretty bad with my eating lately and I would like to blame it on Aunt Flow.  She is bit*ch.

Let’s do a recap of the last few days.  Prepare yourself.  It’s going to be a long one!!

THURSDAY – Isn’t that crazy that the last time I blogged about my food was Thursday?!  AHHH!  So sorry.

Thursday started out at my favorite breakfast shop: Starbucks.  I ordered a grande skinny hazelnut macchiato.  According to Starbucks’ web site, this is 190 calories.  This calculation includes full-fat syrup and I always get a skinny, which is non-fat milk and sugar-free syrup.  So, over calculations!!

Lunch on Thursday was a delicious sub from a local sub shop: Dibella’s.  It’s described as ‘old fashioned submarines’ and it’s pretty much amazing.  I’ve ordered their veggie before but on Thursday, I ordered a small (6.5″) turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onion and yellow mustard on toasted multi-grain bread.  It was amazing!  If you’re ever in Michigan, I highly suggest this place for a sub.

Snacks – I love snacks.  Like really love them.  My snacks were a combination of good and bad.  I had strawberries…and then I had a chocolate chip cookie.  But that cookie was so delicious!

I don’t remember what I had for dinner.  I’m pretty sure I went to the gym…can’t remember.  This is why I need to write DAILY!

FRIDAY – Friday was a really good day.  I went to the gym and did 20 minutes on the elliptical and then a great arm workout.  I was definitely sore.

Friday started out just the way I like it: with 2 pieces of whole wheat toast and peanut butter.  So filling.

And then lunch was completely random, but I was home and was lazy.  I heated up some taquito’s with some light sour cream.

Snack – I had a Nature Valley Granola Thin.  I forgot how amazing these are!

DINNER – Friday’s dinner was pretty random.  The man plays in a soccer league and doesn’t usually get home until about 8, so I’m always starving!  To combat my hunger, I made a salad with romaine lettuce, broccoli and carrots covered in Bolthouse Farm’s creamy yogurt blue cheese dressing.  Seriously, this stuff is amazing! And it’s only 35 calories.

Then, when the man got home, we decided to order some take out Chinese food.  I know, I know, Chinese food is super bad for you…but I didn’t eat that much.  #portioncontrol  I ordered the sweet and sour chicken and rice.  I probably had 1.5 servings.

We spent the night snuggled up in bed watching our own Law and Order: SVU marathon.  Who doesn’t love Olivia and Elliott?  They just make me so happy!

SATURDAY – A crazy Saturday.  We had lots of errands to run (including going to a car dealership to shop for a new car!) and then I just wanted to sleep.  I did about 20 minutes of yoga as exercise and I feel really good.  After our errands, we came home and played tennis for a little over an hour.  The man is super great at tennis and I want to be.  We hit back and forth and got some really good volleys going.  The good news is, I woke up Sunday morning and my arms were sore!  Probably a combo of Friday’s work out with tennis moves that I’m not used to.  What a fun day!

BREAKFAST –  Before we did anything, we ate breakfast.  I ate 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with strawberry jam and butter.  So delicious.

We ran our first errand, and then swung by the man’s all-time favorite place: Chipotle.  Anytime we do anything wedding related or something he doesn’t really want to do, I bribe him by saying we can go to Chipotle for lunch!  Works every time!

LUNCH – I ordered a burrito bowl with brown rice, chicken, guacamole, lettuce and cheese.  It was quite tasty.   I think I’ll be ordering the brown rice from now on!

Then, we went to one of my favorite places:

I love this store.  Although I can’t really afford the majority of the clothes in there, I left with pair of blue earrings and the ‘J’ mug. Score!

SNACKS – My main snack, another trip to Starbucks, but this time, it was for an iced skinny hazelnut macchiato!

And a trip to the mall would not be complete without a trip to Godiva!  I ordered a chocolate dipped macaroon.  #yummy

DINNER – Leftover Chinese while watching The Dilemma on E!  I had low expectations for this movie, but it was actually pretty good!  I love Vince Vaughn.

I can’t believe it’s Sunday, but it’s time to start dinner!  How was your weekend?

Wow – is Tuesday already over?  It’s crazy that I haven’t blogged in a few days and I must say, I miss it!

Blogging gives me such a creative outlet that I crave.  I must have this outlet.  It not only keeps me (mostly) on track with my (mostly) healthy habits, it gives me the creativity that I don’t have in my work environment.

Let’s jump to what’s been happening recently!

FRIDAY – Doesn’t Friday seem like it was so long ago?  I did the normal Friday activities – go to work, come home, hang out with man!  Let’s see, what I ate: a chocolate granola bar and banana for breakfast (sorry for the blurry picture).  And a lovely co-worker brought in Starbucks for everyone!  I ordered a grande skinny carmel maachiato.  Oh how it makes me feel like summer!  Speaking of summer, every other Friday during summer, my office has ‘hot dog Friday.’  It’s definitely not on the healthy list, but I ate some pasta salad, fruit, a hot dog with ketchup and a cookie!  It was pretty good.

Then it was time to come home and r-e-l-a-x!  Bravo was playing a TON of Real Housewives of New Jersey re-runs and I recorded a bunch of them.  I watched an old reunion (like season 2, see Danielle Staub?!) as an ate a banana. And then I had some carrots.  (I guess my lunch wasn’t exactly nutritious).  And then I did about 30 minutes of yoga.  It was wonderful to stretch out all my running muscles.  I can definitely feel a difference when I am stretched and when I’m not.  I need to do this more often!

IMG_1070   IMG_1071   IMG_1072

Then it was time to make dinner.  On the menu: our favorite caprese pasta.  It’s basically a caprese salad over pasta.  I cut up mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes and basil, mix with pasta and garnish with olive oil, salt and pepper.   We could eat this every day.  We enjoyed dinner and prosecco (a lovely celebratory gift from the man!  I’ll explain why we were celebrating at a more appropriate time) while watching Invictus.

IMG_1073   IMG_1074

Also on the menu was a side salad of romaine lettuce with some Bolthouse Farms bleu cheese yogurt dressing.  Oh man, is that stuff good!!

IMG_1075   IMG_1076

SATURDAY – A lovely relaxing weekend should always begin with pancakes.  I made quick pancakes, covered 2 with butter and syrup, with a side of strawberries and bananas.  Oh so delicious.  Then for lunch, I had the remainder of the taco beef for a salad which I topped with cheese, sour cream and cherry tomatoes.  I love taco salads!  We went over to a friend’s apartment for her birthday and dinner consisted of fruit, fruit dip, pretzel crisps and some dip.  It was oh so delicious.  I know I had some other snacks, probably some Cheez-It’s, but I didn’t snap a picture.

IMG_1077   IMG_1078   IMG_1080

Before lunch I went to the gym and did 30 minutes on the arc trainer on hills and then did some arm weights.  It was a really good work out!!

We also did a bad thing and went shopping!  I got a new dress at LOFT and the man splurged and got 2 new suits.  It was an expensive day.  And at the mall there is a pet store that lets you go into a little room and play with puppies….so…..we played with this little guy for a few minutes!  He was so cute and I really, really want a puppy, but it’s just not the right time for us.  But look at how cute!?

SUNDAY – A glorious running day!!  It was perfect weather and I went with 2 friends for a 6 mile run that was quick and included lots of hills and sprints.  I felt great afterwards and really excited for the race in a few days.

Before the run, I ate 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with a banana, peanut butter and chia seeds.  Oh so filling and perfect for a pre-run meal.  And as a reward, we all got Starbucks.  This time, I ordered a skinny hazelnut maachiato.  OH MY GOSH!  This gave the carmel a run for it’s money.  I think I will be drinking this all summer!  After I got home, I showered and ate a granola bar.

IMG_1083   IMG_1084   IMG_1085

Pretty much the rest of the afternoon was spent in front of the TV watching re-runs of Real Housewives of New Jersey.  I don’t care, it was perfect!  We ate dinner pretty early because I was starving and dinner consisted of pizza fries and marinara sauce.  It reminded me of college when my roommate and I would go to the hall store, order pizza fries and watch Project Runway.  Oh how college rocked!!  It’s not healthy, but, hey, 6 miles completed!  And then an apple while watching re-runs.  #juicyjoeisnotjuicy

It was a wonderful weekend!!!  I’ll recap Monday and Tuesday tomorrow.  Holy cow!!!  How was your weekend?

Exactly What I Wanted

Happy Friday!!  Can you believe it’s Friday?  I’m so excited, especially because we’re going to a friend’s wedding this weekend.  I love weddings and am so excited for the two of them!

Let’s just jump into yesterday, shall we?

BREAKFAST – I had a busy morning, so I ran to Starbucks for an iced caramel maachiato with skim milk.  It’s definitely my all time favorite for when the weather is warm!  It’s so refreshing.

I also purchased a lemon loaf at Starbucks.  I was on the run and didn’t bring anything for breakfast.  And, I had a gift card!  Check yes!  According to Starbucks, the lemon loaf has 410 calories.  Yikes!  You will notice that I didn’t eat much for lunch because of this!

LUNCH – I don’t know if you can technically call what I had around lunchtime actual lunch because…well…

That’s correct, I only had a banana.  So, I suppose this would be considered a snack and not lunch.  Okay then, I had a snack of a banana.

Work was crazy, so I didn’t really get a chance to eat anything else until I got home.  And because of the lack of eating, I opted out of a work out for fear of passing out!  Listen to your body, it’s better than over doing it.

SNACK – I will call this a snack.  I came home and had an apple with peanut butter.  It’s definitely an all-time favorite.

DINNER – The positive of not working out, I got to spend some time making dinner.  On the menu, chicken, rice and bell peppers.  It’s a favorite in our household and always hits the spot.  The positive thing about this dish is that I can make a lot of it and then have leftovers.  I’m a huge fan!  I also packed my bowl with more peppers than the man, so it’s healthier, right?

What do you guys think? If you’re going to eat something bad, should you skip another meal to balance out the calories?

Lazy Sunday

Good Afternoon, all. I hope your Monday is off to a great start! What did you think of my earlier post this morning? I’m really excited about the daily columns and am ready to jump in!

Let’s discuss Sunday’s eats, shall we?

BREAKFAST – I woke up late (like 11 am late!) and I wasn’t exactly hungry from the night beofre.  So, I had 2 pieces of whole grain bread with peanut butter.  An oldie but a goodie!

I basically sat on the couch all morning early afternoon recovering from the 7 mile run the day before.  I iced my knees because they hurt like crazy and my shoulders hurt, but I think that’s because I was holding that Gatorade the whole time!

I watched The Devil Wears Prada, which is an all-time favorite.  I mean, how great is Meryl Streep?  I probably wouldn’t like working for someone like that on the daily, but to have access to that fashion closet?  That might be worth it!

SNACK – I chommped on some kettle chips while watching the movie and making the list for our grocery store run!

The grocery store trip went really well!  We spent a decent amount of money, but we aren’t eating out at all this week, except for one dinner for me, which I’m really excited about and will tell you all about afterwards!

One thing we did buy at the store: CHOCOLATE MILK!  When was the last time you had chocolate milk?  I can’t remember either, but it is glorious.  According to an article from Fitness Magazine, chocolate milk is a great post-workout option because it is a “catch-all recovery drink.”  It has a great balance of carbs and protein that are great to recover those tired muscles.  Even though I didn’t workout, I wanted chocolate milk.

DINNER – Caprese pasta.  This recipe is easily our favorite dinner.  It’s super easy, quick and reminds us of Italy.  I made Barilla Plus penne pasta (I actually measured out 1 cup of pasta, the serving size), cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, olive oil, basil leaves and salt and pepper.  It’s basically a caprese salad with pasta.  So delicious!  And, I had a glass of white wine.  All in all, a great dinner!

I really like the Barilla Plus because it has more omega-3’s, protein and fiber than regular white pasta.  Score!

We watched Dinner for Smucks while eating dinner, and I have to say, it was horrible.  I love Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd, but this movie was so stupid.  I seriously felt like I lost some intelligence after watching.

DESSERT – I was a little hungry before bed, so I had another piece of whole wheat bread with peanut butter and chocolate chips.  Amazing!

Happy Monday!  Check back tonight for my Motivational Monday post!

70’s on 7

Happy Sunday!!  It’s my all-time favorite day.  You can sleep in, still have alcohol mimosas at brunch and laying on the couch all day is completely acceptable.

This weekend was a great one.  It was extremely relaxing – Friday night, I stayed home alone watching T.V. and going to sleep early.  It was glorious.  Saturday, I woke up, hung out with the man and then met a friend to run 7 miles!  (More on that later).  Then we went to grab margaritas!  Absolutely wonderful.

FRIDAY – The beginning of the weekend was great.  Work was pretty good, I ate some good eats and cleaned out the DVR.  Breakfast was an apple.  Lunch was a chopped salad with ranch dressing.  It was amazing.  The next picture is of my open sunroof.  The first open sunroof of 2013!!  Oh, then I had a few Oreo’s.  For dinner, I had whole wheat rigatoni with butter and shredded mozzarella cheese.  I spent my Friday night watching some of my favorite Bravo shows over a glass of white wine.  For dessert, I had the last piece of cake in bed.  What is it about eating food in bed that is so delicious?

IMG_0845 IMG_0846 IMG_0847 IMG_0848 IMG_0849 IMG_0851 IMG_0852

SATURDAY – What a great day Saturday was!  Not only was it gorgeous weather, delicious margaritas were devoured.  For breakfast, I had 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with peanut butter, an apple and hazelnut coffee.  Then I had some Sun Chips!  For a pre-run snack, I had a mozzarella cheese stick.  Dinner after the run was chips and guacamole, Georgia Peach margaritas and I split my entree with a friend.  It was a quesadilla with chicken, bacon, cheese and avocado, which was then covered with sour cream.  It was delicious and I’m so glad we split it!!

IMG_0853 IMG_0854 IMG_0855 IMG_0859 IMG_0860

THE RUN – I was supposed to run 7 miles on Saturday, which is what we did.  I swung by a running store to pick up some Gu and a nice running fanny pack!  I had a chocolate Gu on the run, which was amazing.  I also grabbed a Gatorade because I don’t think I drank enough water before hand.

I like my fanny pack.  It’s pink!

I learned a lot of things on my run yesterday.

  • It was 70 degrees – that is too hot for my body.  I’ve fainted 3 times in my life, 2 of which were because I got overheated during exercise.  I really need to watch how I feel while I exercise.  I could feel myself getting hot if there wasn’t a breeze, so I ran pretty slowly.
  • I need to practice hills!   There were some step hills on the run and I walked up those hills because I was exhausted and hot.  That was the only walking I did, but I need to build up my endurance for the race!
  • I can’t carry anything while running.  I put my Gu and car keys in my new fanny pack, but I held the Gatorade in my hand. It was surprisingly heavy.  So, note to self: I really need to drink about 3 times more water during the day when I have to run that far.
  • I can finish anything if I put my mind to it.  Even though I was insanely tired and hot, I finished the run!  It took me a total of 1:21:30, which is about 11:39 average pace.  This pace isn’t horrible since I walked up the hills.  I would say my average running pace was 10:24, which is a little slower than my goal for race day.

I’m proud of myself for running that far and not giving up and turning around.  That’s all that matters.  I’m a little sore today, mostly in my knees and shoulders – I’m sure that means I was running with my shoulders up .  Now it’s time to relax before heading to the grocery store.

How were your runs this weekend?

Glorious Morning

Good Morning!  Happy Friday Thursday!  I have the day off tomorrow to travel and do some wedding planning, so today is my Friday.  Hooray for 4 day work weeks.

I started the day off the right way:

That’s right, everyone!  I went to the gym this morning!  I never really understood what everyone (Tina and Julie) were talking about with the morning work outs, but I have to say, right now I feel great!!

I woke up at 6 AM, drank some water and ate half a Luna bar.  I usually opt not to work out in the morning because I need fuel to get in a good work out.  But, waking up 15 minutes earlier to eat something was definitely the way to go.  I really liked this vanilla almond bar.  I’ll definitely be eating the other half later today.

EXERCISE – On the training schedule, I needed to complete 3 miles.  So, I hopped on the hamster wheel and ran it out!

I completed the 3 miles in 32 minutes, which wasn’t bad, but wasn’t fabulous.  I tend to get really hot on the treadmill, so I started my speed at 5.5, then increased to 5.8 and then finished it out at 6.2.

I was sweating like crazy after wards and was actually a little tired, so I went over to the yoga mat section to stretch out and do some planks.  All in all, the fact that I woke up this morning, ran according to my training schedule and was still able to be working by 8 am, I’m pleased!!!

BREAKFAST – I had a wonderfully balanced breakfast this morning and is my go-to when I work from home.  I had 2 whole wheat Eggo waffles with peanut butter and strawberries on the side.  I also had some Green Mountain hazelnut coffee in my new favorite mug!

Now it’s off to work through the day before it’s time to head over to Milwaukee!!  Have a wonderful day 🙂

Bedtime Thunderstorms

These past 2 days have been crazy intense.  There’s been ups and downs at work, stomach problems, thunderstorms and too many Oreo’s!  As I sit in bed typing this post, there is thunder approaching and 30 Rock is on the TV.  Bed time is my favorite time – it’s when my mind can finally start to relax.  It takes a while (I tend to have racing thoughts) but once it does, it’s glorious!!

With that being said, let’s jump into the past 2 days.

TUESDAY – Tuesday was a decent day for eating but not necessarily for running.

BREAKFAST – I started off my day with some Greek yogurt and vanilla granola.  I love Bear Naked Fit Granola!  It hits the spot every time.

The morning flew by and when lunch hit, I drove back home and made myself some yummy goodness!

LUNCH – I made myself a grilled cheese with 2 pieces of whole wheat toast spread with butter and 2 slices of American cheese.  I had some strawberries on the side, too.  This lunch reminded me of lunches on snow days when I was growing up!  Then I had 3 Oreo’s….

While I was home, I prepared a smoothie that I ate later on in the day.  Into the blender went: frozen mango and strawberries, vanilla Greek yogurt and 1% organic milk.  It was quite good.

EXERCISE – I needed to run 3 miles on Tuesday and I had the full intention of doing so…but I got to the hill and saw these 2:

That’s right!  GEESE!  The geese around here are just plain mean and I certainly wasn’t in the mood to be chased by a stupid , glorified dinosaur.  So, I turned around and by the time I got to my front door, I had run 2 miles and considered it good enough.  It was beautiful outside and I felt really good!  Even thought it was only 2 miles and not 3, it’s better than nothing at all!

I went to get my haircut and left a recipe for the man to follow for dinner.

DINNER – Giada’s orzo with chicken andouille sausage and red peppers.  It is so delicious and it makes so much for leftovers!!

WEDNESDAY – I was supposed to run 4 miles today, but when I got home from work (late) my stomach was pretty upset.  I don’t know why but lately my stomach has felt like knives are twisting my insides.  It makes me want to curl up into a ball and do nothing.  I listened to my body and decided it wouldn’t be smart to run while my stomach hurt.  What do you think is more important – following your training schedule or listening to your body?

BREAKFAST – I had some yummy mango and granola this morning!  It was good, good, good!

I swung over to my favorite place around lunch time: Whole Foods!  They had really good samples available today, including some chips and dip.  Free samples are my favorites!

LUNCH – I came back and reheated some orzo leftovers and 2 small cookies!

SNACKS – Throughout the day, I nibbled on some grapes, a Luna bar and an apple with peanut butter.  These snacks kept me full throughout the day and provided great protein!

Then, it was time to make dinner.  I based it on Skinny Taste’s recipe for chicken parmesan.  Instead of heating up butter, I dipped the chicken breasts in egg, which is healthier.

DINNER – Chicken parmesan and green beans, with a side of 3 Oreo’s!

I’m off to bed now – here’s to tomorrow being my Friday!!
